It's two in the morning.
You were snoozing peacefully when...
"Mom, I don't feel good!" is heard from the other room.
Oh, dear...what could it be?
You go to check and your little one is burning up...he's too upset to be held down and poked under the arm with a thermometer. He's too young to put in his mouth.
What to do?
Well, Mom Select let me review a Temple Touch thermometer and let me tell you...when you are in this situation, you wipe it out, turn it on, wait for the two beeps, then gently place it on your little ones temple to see what the news is. It takes less then 20 seconds total...so much better then the way I did it...with the under the arm pin-down for about a minute or so.
I wish we'd had one last year when Jackson had pneumonia (pictured above). We had to watch him like a hawk and take his temperature often. One of these would have made night time checks so much easier.
Bart loves it and is using it tons to take our temperatures...because we all know if we have even a slight fever it means we have the swine flu and will die within the hour. (love you honey)
So...I love mine so much, it makes me want to reverse time so I could use it on all three of my kids as babies, not just Ethan...really it's not just for babies, though...we all tested it out.
Want to win one? You know you do, esp. with cold, flu, and pig season coming up so soon. (If you want to skip the ropes and get right to owning one, just go to Walmart...it's right under ten dollars!)
All you have to do is.
NOTHING.
Well, leave me a comment. It can say anything (nice that is)
Why nothing, you might ask? Because having a sick kid involves too much already and this thermometer is designed to make your life easier.
Want extra entries? I'll give you a ton of options: (As always, leave a separate comment for each item)
-follow my blog
-grab my button
-blog about this giveaway and link back
-follow me on twitter (jessremington)

-become a facebook fan of my blog...not sure what that means yet, but hey, you will be ready when i do...just click on the button on the left.
-tell me the worst experience you've had with a sick little one.
-share a tip on how to give a sick little one their medicine.
-give me your opinion of the swine flu...is it worth all the fuss?
-share tips on how you keep yourself and your little ones healthy in the winter
-answer this question: Are you getting the flu shot? What about your kids? What about the swine flu shot? AND WHY?
-for three extra entries (and yes, leave three comments, saying, "See Above" or something) go check out Temple Touch's website and tell me something you learned from it...this can be done every day b/c you learn something knew every day.
Everything that could be done more then once (like the tweeting, sick one experiences, advice on med., tips on staying healthy) can be! So, if you are so wanting this thermometer (no, you can't have MINE, you get your own!) then you can just enter every day to your hearts content.
Now...I hope you all stay healthy and don't ever need to use this.

Oh wow this sounds so neat. I'd love to win one.
oh oh, pick me I want one. I already follow you on twitter and fb, but maybe I can come up with somethin' somethin' extra.
We all know this would get a ton of use at my house. I love Leo to pieces but man he needs to get healthy.
What a great product. It is a nightmare trying to get my Wiggle Bean to hold still long enough to take her temperature under the arm.
Neither myself of my daughter will be getting the H1N1 shot. I do not trust that they put enough research into it to give it to her. I never get a flu shot.
I would really love this! I just had a sick kiddo over the weekend. I feel so bad waking them up just to take their temperature.

My worst experience with a sick kid was when my daughter was about 15 months old. She was really sick and the nurse kept giving me the "give it some time" line. Her fever got so high and shot up so quick she went into a febrile seizure. At the time I had never heard of one and didn't know what was happening so I called 911. We went to the ER in an ambulance. It turned out she had a double ear infection and a throat infection. I learned that day to always listen to my instincts!

I try to keep us healthy by eating good foods, getting plenty of exercise and wash those hands!

I have never had a flu shot and, fortunately, never gotten the flu.
I have also never gotten my daughter a flu shot and she's never had the flu. My son, on the other hand, we have always gotten a flu shot (except last year - I forgot!). He has asthma and it was suggested by his doctor that he get one. My husband gets flu shots at work but often gets the flu. LOL
I don't think we'll be getting the swine flu shot. From what I've heard they don't recommend it for asthmatics.

There are 1,378 cases of the flu today.

When my daughter was 15 months old, she had 103 fever. She was just laying in bed which was so scary for since this was the first time she was really sick.
I've never gotten a flu shot before but I'll be getting one this year because of all this H1N1 talk. So, yes I am scared of this swine flu.
Oh yeah we need one of those around here!

I get the kids to take medicine because I make it fun. I make it quick and easy and we move on really quick from it. I try to distract them as much as possible.

To try and keep healthy, we use antibacterial alot. My 2 year old already holds his hands out when he sees me pull out the bottle. I even bring a mini lysol bottle with me everywhere we go. I spray the shopping carts and just about everything I can.
So, this sounds like an awesome idea.
Also, I can give you a little insight into the swine flu. Not that much fun. Fortunately, because my doctor caught it right at the start, I didn't have to deal with as many of the respiratory issues, but I'm still trying to get my energy levels back to normal. It feels a lot like mono. Except you're isolated. Which is miserable.
In other words, I would get the shot if I wasn't already immunized by experience.
I could certainly use one of these...I'm really not all that good at traditional thermometers...

Luckily, my kids are fairly healthy. Having said that though, we've had our share of trips to the emergency dept/walk-in clinic. One of the scariest for me was when my son was 8 months old. He was rather congested and appeared to be having trouble breathing. He also wasn't nursing very well. We took him to the nurse practitioner and she immediately sent him to the emergency room. They sent him for a chest x-ray (I think it hurt me more than him even though he was screaming his little lungs out) and then had the respiratory therapist come and teach us how to give him ventolin. He was okay but it was a few scary days.
melacan at hotmail dot com
I don't have too many medecine tips. My 3 yr. old takes them without much trouble because he's told it will make him feel better. For the baby, it's squeeze it into her cheek and try to keep it in there until she swallows.
melacan at hotmail dot com
Having never had the swine flu or knowing anyone with it, I can't say whether it's worth the fuss or not. Having lived in Asia during SARS, however, I'm not into taking chances or underestimating the potential devastation of illnesses.
melacan at hotmail dot com
We will be getting the flu shot - my hubby and I and both kids. For one, it seems to help and secondly, I work at a hospital and if there's a flu outbreak and I haven't had my shot, I either have to take tamiflu (which seems worse than the shot to me) or take unpaid time off work which isn't an option.
As for the swine flu shot, I'm not sure. It hasn't been an issue in our community so...

I would love to win one! Taking Daniel's tempereature is a nightmare!
I follow your blog!
My family will be getting the flu shot because I think it works. As for the H1N1, I'm not so sure. I really think they were rushing it on this one.
I think the seriousness of the swine flu is a little over-played.
Sometimes, to get Daniel to take his medicine, I mix it in with some juice.
The best tip to staying healthy is WASH YOUR HANDS!!!
The worst sickness experience I have had with Daniel was when he had back to back ear infections last year. He was so lethargic and just wimpered a lot.

Worse experience with a sick kid:
My MIL had the kids for the weekend and Dawson got croup while with her. She gave him the neighbors prescription medicine since she felt my suggestion of a steam shower and vaporizer wouldn't work. He arrived back home with a 102 fever and she hadn't even noticed. I know she was trying to be nice and give me my weekend alone (DH was out of town) but she didn't even call to tell me he was sick! So that's my worst experience with a sick kid (although David would probably argue that Dawson puking on him, twice, at Ainsly's b-day party is the worst experience).
And swine flu is waaaay overrated in my opinion. Too much fuss over it.
And my kids will probably get the flu shot - their pediatrician is BIG on giving it. But I and DH won't. He tends to get the flu when he gets the shot and I've never had one and don't plan on getting one, ever.
As for staying healthy, we don't do anything special. Just the typical washing hands and tossing kleenex as we use them. We've never really had a problem with being sick in our family - we recover pretty fast. Except for Dawson's croup - that just lingers and lingers and lingers (and keeps coming back!)
Great giveaway, just in time for flu season!
The worst experience was when my oldest son got the croup at 6 months old.
Our pediatrician says the swine flu is minor compared to the regular flu. The real one to worry about is the bird flu.
To stay healthy in the winter, we try to avoid large crowds and use hand sanitizer whenever out in public.
I got the flu shot and so did my kids (minus the baby who is too young). We will probably get the shot for the swine flu, just to be on the safe side.

Oh, I would SO LOVE one of these! Hope I win!!
answer this question: Are you getting the flu shot? What about your kids? What about the swine flu shot? AND WHY
Yes, I am getting it..because Michaela is not old enough to get her own. The 'bigger' kids got the flumist.
I don't know about the swine flu shot...I'm waiting for a sign from above.
I cannot say enough about staying hydrated to stay healthy! Drinking tons of water is so good for you....keeps you constantly flushing (literally) any bad toxins out!

Since C is our first we don't have a TON of experience with sickness, but at a few weeks, he did get RSV. We had to do round the clock nebulizer treatments. Not so much fun!
We always put C's medicine in his bottle, worked like a charm!
I am allergic to the flu shot, so I can't get it. C is allergic to eggs, and therefore also won't get the flu shot. We are passing on the H1N1 for the same reasons.
So I'm tired of the COLD, windy weather. I want cool, crisp weather. Is that too much to ask for?

I think our worst sick experience so far was when K was hospitalized for the meningitus rule out. Having a baby with an IV in her head right after having a spinal tap.. it was terrible. The diarrhea and vomiting that came from the iv meds was TERRIBLE too.
K is really good about taking meds. We haven't had any problems yet w/ trying to "trick her" into taking them. *Knock on wood*
When she was younger (infant) we used to put her medicine in a bottle nipple and give it to her.
I'm personally tired of hearing about H1N1. I'm sorry for families who have lost loved ones to it. But in my opinion, it is no more deadly then the regular flu.
During the winter and every other season..we wash hands ALL OF THE TIME! Also get lots of sleep and plenty of fluids. I love up on the orange juice even more during cold and flu season too!
K already got her flu shots (it was broken down into 2) and I don't think I'm going to get it. Tim is though. Maybe I'll change my mind..but I haven't gotten the flu shot in YEARS and also haven't had the flu in years. NONE of us will be getting so experimental who-knows-what aka the pig flu shot. We're not guinea pigs
I learned according to the CDC..2,326 people have the flu today.. why do I find that number to be crazy low?

Having 4 lil boys & a new bean on the way I could SO use this!
my worst experience was when my now 4 yr old was hospitalized & hooked up to IVs for dehydration & pnuemonia
My boys have all taken medicine really well but I make it seem like a fun experience I think if you sit & ew about it then they are more likely to not take it...
I honestly dont feel the swine flu is worth all the fuss :-/ but were going to wash our hands & lysol it up ;)
to keep everyone healthy dont go to germ infested places (walmart) wash hands alot, disinfect like crazy, keep indoors as much as possible, & of course sneeze/cough in your forearm
me & the older 3 boys got the flu shot, my 15 month old is not. We will not be getting the H1N1 it's much to new for my liking & I don't feel my unborn child or my boys are guinea pigs ;)
I learned: Never try to reduce a fever by sponging down your baby with rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol can be absorbed into your baby’s bloodstream through the skin. It can also cool him too quickly, which can actually raise his temperature
see above...i didnt know ppl rubbed their kids down in alcohol....
see above...i think its strange someone would do that

Extra rest...extra rest will help both in recovery and prevention of colds and other nasty viruses.
Nanna having RSV at 6 months was definitely the worst...she did not care for those breathing treatments the first couple times, but she did get used to them after a few.
Homemade Chicken soup helps me feel better..not sure if it has any real powers, but as long as I feel better, I'm not one to be skeptical. =)

Today I learned:
A low-grade fever is categorized as temperatures ranging from 100.4 F (38 C) to 102 F (39 C). Whether or not you use a thermometer is up to you, but parents are generally good at knowing if their child feels unusually hot or not.

Fiona and I are both getting the regular flu shot. Nathan will too as long as I can get him there. I have asthma and with being pregnant and having a little one it is important for us not to get the flu. I could very easily end up in the hospital with it. I don't think we are getting the swine flu vaccine. There have just been too many complications with the vaccine for me to feel safe about it. We will just keep a close eye and if one of us develops flu symptoms we'll go to the doctor and hopefully get some tamiflu.

I just found your blog, via MOM. I'm loving the pictures and the posts! I could definitely use a thermometer like this, we just had a baby 2 months ago and I'm remembering exactly why I always hated cold and flu season- taking rectal temps is awful!
I so need one. Jack wont hold still long enough for a regular thermometer.

Jack had Rota Virus when he was one and boy was it GROSS!
Our Dr said that people are freaking out about swine flu way too much and that people die alot more often in a year from seasonal flu than swine.
so im not worried, still getting the boy a shot though.
havnt gotten my flu shot yet, going monday, hubby and boy both have theres. they will also get the swine flu shot.
I learned today there were
2,326 cases of the flu

I'm following your tweets now too!
Our worst sick kiddo time was when my oldest and I had a nasty viral bug, and my middle child was then an infant. My daughter and I were both rushing in and out of the bathroom, almost in a battle for the bowl, and all the while poor DJ was desperately trying to nurse and figure out why mommy was so sick. Tough times!
To get my older little ones (6 and 9) to take yucky tasting medicine, we sandwich it in between eating a popsicle. The cold of the ice pop numbs up their tongue, they take the medicine, and then as soon as it's done they can go right back to the ice pop.
Swine flu? I'm on the fence. We've never gotten flu shots before, and we've never had the flu. But this year, with a newborn around, it seems more risky. So I strong armed Dale and the kids to the doc and we all got them so we could protect Davis. I dunno if it's all hype, but I'm buying into it to the extent that I want to protect us all...
To stay healthy we focus on a great diet, exercise, exposure to a reasonable amount of germs, and when someone in the house does get sick, we try our best to isolate and disinfect everything!
We got the flu shot, for our first time (none of us ever had before). We'll all also be getting the h1n1 shot. Davis is only 2 months, so too small for the vaccines, and small enough that a bout of flu would be very worrisome. We're getting the shot to protect our lil Rowdy.
Something I learned from their website is that their thermometer doesn't lead to cross contamination from family member to family member. That's important when you've got the kids lined up waiting to get checked out for sickie-ickies. Very cool!

I learned about the difference betweet the cold and the flu.
The difference between the two is the presence of a fever. So, if you’re running a high temperature, it’s probably the flu. (Good to know)
